SCHADS Broken Shift Changes 1-Jul-2022

There are some key changes coming to the SCHADS award on 1-Jul-2022 that has been incorporated within Brevity. This covers two aspects of managing broken shifts - paying a minimum shift length as well as an allowance for the second and third shift within a broken shift arrangement. You must pay employees based on these new requirement from the first full payroll period on or after 1 July 2022 e.g. if you pay weekly Mon-Fri the first payroll period will start on the first Monday after 1-Jul-22 i.e. 4-Jul-22.

You can read more about the changes here

This article will cover how to configure the pay items within Xero & MYOB as well as how to enable the broken shift calculations for casual and part time employees within Brevity.

Configuring Pay Items within Xero & MYOB

According to the changes, an employee required to work a broken shift with 1 unpaid break will be paid an allowance of 1.7% ($18.34) of the standard rate, per broken shift and 2.25% ($24.27) for 2 unpaid breaks, both for Casual and Part Time / Full Time Employee.

You should create two pay items within Xero/MYOB for the above allowances and sync these to Brevity. These will be mapped later within Brevity. We are still getting clarification if supperannuation needs to be paid for the allowance so for now we will consider this to be setup the same as sleepovers with the relevant rate assigned depending if it is the first or second shift allowance. This must be created within Xero as a OTE with Rate Type of Rate per Unit and Type of Unit as Hours as shown below for Brevity to be able to transfer these on a timesheet.

Minimum Shift Length Payment

Another major change to the award is the minimum payment for social and community services employees. When performing disability services work they will be paid a minimum of 2 hours and 3 hours for all other
employees.

Pay Rate Loading in Brevity

Once the pay item is created in your payroll system and synced to Brevity, you can setup the Pay Item in Brevity to enabled the calculation for shifts in Brevity.

Please note that this will need to be done for each employment type that you have setup in Brevity that you will pay broken shift allowances for i.e. Casual, Part Time, etc..

Via the menu item in Brevity Administration > 8. Pay Rate Loading, you will need to add a loading for the two broken shift allowances. Again, this needs to be done for each Employment Type in Brevity that you will pay broken shift allowances for.

Schedule Board Notifications

Once enabled Brevity will flag when the staff has either not been scheduled to worked the minimum number of hours or if a Broken Shift applies

Allowances on Timesheet

Brevity will also generate entries for the allowance on the staff timesheet based on the number of broken shifts they have done on the day.
